The Symbian OS is free and open-source

The Symbian Foundation announced yesterday the availability of free source code for its operating system now available to all.

This June 24, 2008 that Nokia had announced its intention to buy Symbian for EUR 264 million, while Google in his cartoons prepared its first Android mobile phones. The goal was to make the free OS for mobile phones to boost its own sales of mobile phones.
The Symbian Foundation said yesterday that the source code for Symbian was now available for download for free, and that with 4 months ahead of schedule originally set.
This announcement illustrates the desire to boost Nokia's Symbian smartphones faced with the threat Android (Google), iPhone and BlackBerry nibbling increasing its market share. The Finnish giant hopes to attract new developers on the platform, and does not hesitate to point the finger Android which according to Lee Williams, Executive Director of the Foundation would not be truly open-source: "Approximately one third of Android code is open, nothing more. And it is only a collection of middleware. Everything else is closed or proprietary.
Recall that Symbian is now the first mobile OS. The Foundation said that in 10 years, this OS was released on over 330 million mobile devices. The first Symbian smartphones ^ 3 (new version of the OS) will arrive in the second half of 2010.
